Ahead of World Engineering Day, March 4, ANCA Group chief executive Martin U. Ripple says engineering thinking now matters more than ever

For much of modern history, engineers have been expected to advance humanity and build the future without being invited to shape it.

They are often portrayed as technically brilliant but socially awkward, more comfortable with machines than people. A familiar cartoon shows a mother taking her child to the doctor, only to be told, “Oh no, it’s worse than I feared. Your son is going to be an engineer. The joke implies a lifelong condition of logic over emotion and facts over conversation.

Yet this stereotype obscures a deeper truth. Almost everything that defines contemporary life from our homes and transport systems to our food supply chains, energy networks, medical devices and digital infrastructure – exists because engineers designed, built, tested and continuously improved it. While others debate direction, engineers quietly turn ideas into reality. Why then does a profession so central to modern civilisation remain so frequently misunderstood?

My recent attainment of Fellow status with Engineers Australia was a welcome milestone, and an invitation to reflect on what it really means to be an engineer. It is not a single profession, but a universe of disciplines united by one goal: to make things work – better, safer and more efficiently. On World Engineering Day, it is timely to ask a more provocative question: have we sidelined the very people best equipped to solve the world’s most complex problems?

At their core, engineers are guided by facts, physics and a strong sense of responsibility. They are trained to work within constraints, assess risk and deliver solutions that function in the real world. Their instinct is not to argue ideology, but to ask practical questions. Does it work? Is it safe? Can it be improved? Human progress has always depended on this mindset.

One of the most persistent misconceptions about engineers is that they are purely technical beings, human calculators bound by formulas and rules. In reality, engineering is deeply creative. Engineers imagine solutions that do not yet exist. They balance physics, cost, safety, sustainability and time, and still find a way forward.

Innovation is not optional in engineering. It is the professional foundation of engineers. When societies face challenges such as climate change, infrastructure decay or digital security, creativity constrained by physical laws becomes one of the most powerful forces available.

Every profession influences the direction societies take, and all bring value. However, history shows the consequences when decision-making becomes dominated by a narrow set of perspectives. In recent decades, particularly in advanced economies, economic and legal frameworks have increasingly prioritised short term financial optimisation over long term capability. Ideology has often crowded out first principles thinking to the detriment of real progress.

Manufacturing was progressively offshored as systems were optimised for immediate return. Assets were squeezed, resilience was reduced, and industrial capability and capacity was treated as a cost rather than a strategic investment. The result has been fragile supply chains, lost skills and increased dependence on external systems over which nations have limited control.

This is not a criticism of finance, law or business leadership. It is a recognition that balance matters. Societies function best when different forms of expertise are heard, and when engineering judgement plays a central role in long-term decision-making. When engineers are valued, investment tilts toward infrastructure, manufacturing, research, and resilient systems rather than short‑term gains. How we talk about engineers today will help determine what kind of society we are capable of sustaining tomorrow.

Decisions are not made on theory alone, but on evidence, testing and continuous improvement. It is this engineering discipline that allows Australian technology to compete and lead on the world stage.

Many of today’s most urgent global challenges, including climate change, food security, energy transition and resource efficiency, cannot be solved through rhetoric nor ideology alone. Awareness and activism have a role, but lasting progress depends on innovation. It requires systems thinking. It depends on good engineering, and it is worth pondering, whether we should be listening more closely to them.

Engineers are also lifelong learners by necessity. Technologies evolve, materials improve, software advances and regulations shift. Standing still is not an option. Continuous improvement and a growth mindset are embedded in the profession.

Efficiency is often misunderstood as cold or mechanical, but in engineering it is ethical. Doing more with less means wasting fewer resources, reducing emissions, lowering costs and preventing failure. In a finite world, efficiency is not just good engineering. It is responsible stewardship.

Agriculture provides a powerful example. In the Netherlands, engineers have enabled tomatoes to be grown across multiple vertical levels, dramatically increasing yield per square metre while reducing water use. Carefully engineered LED lighting systems improve flavour, accelerate growth and optimise energy efficiency. These outcomes were not achieved through aspiration, but through applied engineering.

The same principle applies to climate action. While public debate is essential, solutions will ultimately come from technologies that reduce emissions, increase efficiency and enable sustainable growth. LED lighting, electric vehicles and advanced manufacturing systems are already reshaping how energy is used and how products are made. These changes may appear incremental, but their cumulative impact is profound.

Within advanced manufacturing, companies like ANCA rely on engineers to constantly push the boundaries of precision, automation and efficiency. Whether it is reducing energy use per component, improving machine accuracy or enabling customers to manufacture more sustainably, progress comes from engineering innovation, not shortcuts.

Emerging technologies will accelerate this transformation. Artificial intelligence has effectively removed many limits on human cognitive capacity at minimal cost. When combined with robotics and advanced manufacturing, it will fundamentally change how products are designed, produced and maintained.

Looking ahead, a shift in the global energy paradigm may prove even more consequential. If energy becomes abundant and low-cost within the coming decades, the implications for humanity are significant. With AI-driven systems, robotics and affordable energy, materials could be recycled indefinitely. Legacy landfill sites could become future resource centres. Entire industrial models could be re-engineered for sustainability rather than extraction. These are not abstract ideals. They are engineering challenges and engineering opportunities.

Across cultures and disciplines, engineers tend to share common traits. They are evidence-led rather than ideological; methodical rather than impulsive; calm under pressure because panic rarely fixes systems; relentlessly solution oriented, always asking how a problem can be resolved rather than who should be blamed.

These are not only professional attributes; they are civic virtues that sit within a long philosophical tradition. Epicurus, for example, argued that rational understanding of the world reduces fear and improves human well-being – an outlook that closely mirrors the engineering mindset, which applies logic to uncertainty and calm analysis to chaos. In an era of noise, outrage and short-term thinking, this quiet rationality may be engineering’s greatest strength, offering stability, clarity and progress.

Engineers may not always be the loudest voices in the room. They may favour data over drama and solutions over slogans. But their work underpins modern civilisation, and their thinking will define how successfully we navigate the next stage of human development.

On World Engineering Day, the question is not whether engineers deserve greater recognition. The question is whether societies can afford to move forward without fully valuing engineering judgement, evidence-based decision-making and the discipline of building solutions that actually work.

If a child is curious, analytical and driven to understand how things work, perhaps we should smile and say, “I am glad they will be an engineer.”

And then recognise just how much the world will depend on that outcome.
