BAE Systems Australia releases an Industry Handbook for manufacturers looking for defence contracts

The Navigating Defence: Industry Handbook has been created in conjunction with BAE Systems Australia’s Navigating Defence Series training and education program to support the development of Australia’s defence industry. It is designed as a resource for leaders of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) who are starting their journey in the defence industry and wish to understand the requirements and available support. We recognise that the Australian Defence sector offers a unique yet challenging opportunity for businesses of all sizes to succeed.

Navigating the complexities of supply can be daunting for small businesses, particularly those unfamiliar with the industry’s unique requirements, regulations, and restrictions. Businesses often confront intricate and lengthy procurement processes, strict regulatory compliance, certification and security clearance requirements, and export controls, which create high barriers to entry and can complicate efforts for businesses to enter the sector. However, securing defence contracts can offer long-term and far-reaching benefits for businesses, providing substantial, multi-year revenue streams, an enhanced reputation in non-defence sectors, and opportunities to supply and operate in new international markets.

This comprehensive Industry Handbooks will provide useful information about:

  • Understanding the Defence policy landscape;
  • Meeting defence industry supplier requirements, including security, quality, pricing and estimating, and sustainability obligations;
  • Creating diverse and inclusive workplaces, including engaging with First Nations people and veterans;
  • Completing business development activities;
  • Accessing defence industry support programs, advocacy and resources;
  • Understanding the defence industry’s research and development (R&D) landscape;
  • Achieving export success.

Security

Businesses in the defence sector often have access to sensitive information, making them targets for cyber attacks and other supply chain threats. Without sufficient protections, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are vulnerable to malicious actors and nation-states seeking easy access to national security information held by the government, defence, and larger enterprises.

The Defence Industry Security Program (DISP) outlines the expected security requirements and guidelines for Australian businesses engaged in Defence work. The DISP assessment process serves as the security vetting protocol for Australian businesses within the defence industry supply chain. DISP membership is open to any Australian company seeking to participate in the defence industry supply chain.

The handbook also guides interested parties in navigating and producing an effective QUAD chart. These QUAD charts are an essential and standard tool for defence industry suppliers to communicate key information about their capabilities to prospective customers. Additional steps are added to assist suppliers in attending and exhibiting at related major trade shows, registering with ICN Gateway, and checking upcoming opportunities on AusTender.
