Austech 2015 will be held in Melbourne from 26 to 29 May, and one of the highlights will be the Manufacturers Pavilion, a unique showcase of the best in Australian manufacturing.

This area of the exhibition allows manufacturing companies to promote their capabilities and learn about new opportunities available to help them grow their businesses. Throughout the duration of Austech, the Manufacturers Pavilion will also provide the venue for an impressive schedule of presentations from renowned industry experts. Among the subjects explored over the course of the speakers schedule are:

  • Innovation or Imposition – Which is it to be? Innovation is the essential turbulence that drives business growth and development. The alternative is stagnation, and ultimately business failure. Indeed recent statistics reveal that without innovation the life expectance of a business in these fast-moving times is less than ten years.
  • Pushing the Boundaries of Sheet Forming – A University of Queensland and QMI Solutions research project. Incremental sheet forming (ISF) is a flexible manufacturing process in which complex 3D shapes are formed from a sheet of metal using a simple moving tool (stylus). In such a way an infinite variety of shapes can be made using one machine (like 3D printing with sheet). Also ISF allows sheet metal to be stretched much further than in conventional stamping operations, well beyond the common forming limit curve.
  • Maximise the value of your business. Business valuations normally focus on financial statements, but there are many intangible drivers of value within a business that are not captured in a typical valuation. Core Value combines a business valuation with a business improvement tool, enabling the capture of all value drivers across a business and offering a proven way for increasing the value of any firm.
  • Five Essential Competitive Components for SMEs. The components that make an SME competitive in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis are very different to that of the pre-GFC days. We’ve used data from over 800 companies to identify the five essential common characteristics of what makes the modern SME competitive. See if you have these five components in your company, and what you can do to get them.
  • Economies of 3D Printing Sand Cores – A University of Queensland and QMI Solutions research project. Learn about the application of 3D printing technology to produce sand cores for use in manufacturing castings with complicated shapes. In this research project, eight sets of moulds were produced with sand core 3D printing technology. The 3D printed moulds were then used to produce castings at the White Industries foundry in Dalby, Queensland.

Other topics include: ‘Accessing Opportunities on Major Projects: The SME Experience’, by Don Matthews of the Industry Capability Network (ICN); and ‘Transitioning out of Automotive’ by Richard Reilly of the Federation of Automotive Products Manufacturers (FAPM).
