Thursday at AMW2024

There was a healthy dose of enthusiasm among the stands at AMW2024 today. I reckon people had some good sleeps because the word is this is the day to impress. Like Wednesday, the hours are extended to 7 pm to assist with attendees visiting later in the day, and giving everyone more time to check out every corner of the AMW2024 show. So much going on and there was an uptick in visitors after hours last night as predicted. Among the many scanners on display at the huge Hi-Tech Metrology stand there were some of the very latest solutions, in this case a handheld 3D scanner, an Ametek Creaform Handiscan Elite mounted on a robot arm, which was scan-building a digital twin of an object on a platform for later inspection. There were Hexagon coordinate Measuring Machines, and a range of micron-accurate digital instruments from Trimos, Sylvac and Bowers. Another stood like a surveyor’s LiDAR station on a tripod. That’s where the similarity stops. This Leica Absolute Tracker is able to scope a viewed surface from a…

AXT coming to AMW2024

AXT has built a portfolio of products to suit the demands of industrial and academic customers looking to take their additive manufacturing beyond the limits of domestic systems. Catering to polymer, metal and ceramic 3D printing, we have systems that offer levels of precision superior to filament printers as well as imaging and analysis tools to verify the quality and accuracy of what you have produced. Using DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology, Miicraft 3D printers exceed the limitations of filament printers, producing parts with higher resolution (39µm) with excellent uniformity and surface finish. Boston Microfabrication (BMF) go a step further enabling you to fabricate components with resolutions down to 2µm using PµSL (Photo Micro Stereolithography) technology. Their systems combine ultra-high resolution, accuracy and precision. For the ultimate in polymer 3D printers, the UpNano NanoOne 3D printers allow you to print parts with resolutions down to 170nm. Their 2PP (2 Photon Polymerisation) technology dispels the myth that 2PP printers sacrifice speed for resolution. For those looking to print with metals, Aconity 3D offers modular tailorable laser powder bed fusion systems with printable…

Monash Coates collab

A new collaboration between Monash University and Coates Engineering Solutions is using high-strength steel, common to the automotive industry, to develop a lightweight high-capacity propping solution for temporary construction works. The innovative solution, called Quadshore, has undergone rigorous destructive and non-destructive experimental tests at material, component and system levels, under Australian Safety Standards, to demonstrate the durability and superior performance of the product. Lead academic researcher, Associate Professor Amin Heidarpour, from Monash University’s Department of Civil Engineering said high-strength steel has not been efficiently utilised in temporary structures due to its limited plasticity. “Quadshore contains hybrid components that creatively maximise optimum use of both high-strength and mild-steel to create lightweight, high-strength structural elements and boltless connections,” Associate Professor Heidarpour said. “The unique experimental facilities and lab environment at Monash’s Civil Engineering Department allowed our team to undertake the experimental tests on this product that replicated its behaviour in real-world settings.” With a working load limit of up to 170 tonnes, it is the lightest heavy-duty structural propping system available anywhere in the world. Over the past ten years research…

From the CEO – Government intervention into rising Workcover Premiums is required

Here I have outlined five impacts of increasing WorkCover premiums and its effects on businesses, employees, and the broader economy. Financial Strain on Business Rising WorkCover premiums can impose a substantial financial burden on businesses, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with limited resources. Increased premiums directly impact a company's bottom line, reducing profitability and hindering growth opportunities. This financial strain may force businesses to allocate funds originally earmarked for expansion, innovation, or employee benefits towards covering insurance costs, thereby impeding their ability to invest in crucial areas essential for long-term success. Deterrent to Employment Higher WorkCover premiums may act as a deterrent to employment, particularly for businesses operating in labor-intensive industries. Employers facing escalating insurance costs may be reluctant to hire additional staff or expand their workforce, fearing the added financial strain of increased premiums. Consequently, job creation could stagnate, exacerbating unemployment rates and impeding economic…

Innovation at crossroads

The Australian economy would be $100bn bigger and boosted by 42,000 new jobs by hitting a target of investing 3% of GDP in research and development, new analysis by the nation’s peak body for science and technology has found. Speaking at the National Press Club this week, Science & Technology Australia President Professor Sharath Sriram will make a powerful case for rapidly reaching the 3% target to turn Australia into an innovation nation, reveal how to create an innovation ecosystem that will secure the country’s economic future, and warn of the consequences of failing to do so. Professor Sriram is a research rockstar and a commercialisation champion based at RMIT. His work connecting industry and researchers has created more than $9m in commercial partnerships for his university, and spurred innovations including smart bedding products for aged-care support, a wearable device for continuous molecular monitoring, and miniature biosensors for monitoring respiratory illnesses. He will deliver the address as the centrepiece of STA’s Science Meets Parliament (SMP). Now into its 24th year, SMP brings hundreds of scientists and technologists from all…

PWR in QLD

If you know anything about motorsport, you will know that Formula 1 is the pinnacle. If you manufacture performance automotive parts, you would be justified in thinking that you have made it, if your parts are on board one of the F1 cars. How impressed would you be with a company that doesn’t just supply one team, but works with the entire field? What if I was to tell you, this same company was also the primary supplier for NASCAR, MotoGP and pretty much every other high-end motorsport category, including our very own V8 Supercars? Would you be surprised to hear that such a company does exist, and they are based in Australia? The company in question is PWR Advanced Cooling Technology, based on the Gold Coast. Originally a side business started by father and son team Kees and Paul Weel after various forays into motorsport categories, including the aforementioned V8 Supercars (or a previous incarnation thereof), they identified a need in the marketplace to design and manufacture high-performance, lightweight cooling systems to meet their exacting…
