A Major Opportunity for Australia’s Advanced Manufacturing Sector

The Western Australian Government has today announced plans for a proposed large-scale defence manufacturing hub aimed at strengthening sovereign industrial capability and attracting international investment. The announcement was made today at IODS 2026 by Premier Roger Cook with Minister for Defence Industries Paul Papalia and Manufacturing Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson, and outlined the Government’s call for industry participation in shaping the proposed precinct. Expressions of interest (EOI) are now open to local, national and international companies to help shape the proposed hub, which would focus on advanced defence manufacturing and supporting technologies. Areas identified as part of the opportunity include aerospace, autonomous systems, advanced materials, precision manufacturing, energetics and space technologies. AMTIL strongly supports this initiative as it aligns with our commitment to championing advanced manufacturing growth, fostering industry collaboration, and ensuring Australian manufacturers remain globally competitive. The Western Australian Government said the initiative was intended to support Australia’s sovereign defence capability while contributing to allied supply chains and growing global demand for advanced defence manufacturing. “This is a call out to our…

Blast From the Future

**This story originally appeared in the February 2026 edition of AMT Magazine** Developed by accident overseas, adopted in Australia after investments from a food packaging printer and today used to restore fast jets – cold spray additive manufacturing (CSAM) technology is, one Melbourne specialist insists, “just another tool” in the advanced manufacturing toolbox. What Rosebank Engineering Senior Manager, Engineering and Projects Jarrod Watts means is that CSAM technology should be considered the same as any other specialist manufacturing process – like semi-automated shot peening or precision multi-axis CNC machining – a highly technical innovation, but one which is accessible to a wide pool of manufacturers. “There’s no doubt Australia is seen as a world leader in this innovative technology,” he says. “We’re no longer just sustaining Australian assets – we’re part of a global supply chain, and technologies like this help us compete and win on a global stage,” he says. “The momentum is certainly building, and the customer base is expanding. People are…

Why ‘physical’ AI could reset precision manufacturing

Newly announced technology greatly expands capacity of AI Replicates real world physics to truncate lead time and simulate stress testing of products Rolling out to select partners imminently, with plans for broad availability this year At 3DEXPERIENCE World in Houston, a joint announcement from NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang and Dassault Systèmes CEO Pascal Daloz put “physical AI” and production‑grade virtual twins at the centre one of the largest engineering gatherings of the year. The message delivered to nearly ten thousand attendees was bold: a new class of industrial AI, grounded in physics rather than just language, could compress the distance between concept and reality in dramatic fashion. Whether or not this partnership ends up defining the next decade of manufacturing software, the idea of physical AI matters. It signals a shift that could reshape design, simulation, testing and factory optimisation for manufacturers of all sizes, including in Australia’s precision sector. “AI is just an engine — you…

Navigating defence

The Navigating Defence: Industry Handbook has been created in conjunction with BAE Systems Australia’s Navigating Defence Series training and education program to support the development of Australia’s defence industry. It is designed as a resource for leaders of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) who are starting their journey in the defence industry and wish to understand the requirements and available support. We recognise that the Australian Defence sector offers a unique yet challenging opportunity for businesses of all sizes to succeed. Navigating the complexities of supply can be daunting for small businesses, particularly those unfamiliar with the industry's unique requirements, regulations, and restrictions. Businesses often confront intricate and lengthy procurement processes, strict regulatory compliance, certification and security clearance requirements, and export controls, which create high barriers to entry and can complicate efforts for businesses to enter the sector. However, securing defence contracts can offer long-term and far-reaching benefits for businesses, providing substantial, multi-year revenue streams, an enhanced reputation in non-defence sectors, and opportunities to supply and operate in new international markets. This comprehensive Industry Handbooks will provide…

Missiles and munitions

The Albanese Government has taken another step towards rapidly establishing domestic manufacturing of missiles and munitions at scale under a plan that bolsters Australia’s defence capabilities while creating hundreds of jobs. The government has announced that Thales has been selected as the preferred tenderer to build a new domestic forging capability for 155mm M795 artillery ammunition. Australia, the United States, and other international partners use the 155mm M795 artillery ammunition for the M777A2 Light Towed Howitzer, which is critical for close-fire capability. Defence will work with Thales, the preferred company, to build, establish, and commission the forge at the Commonwealth-owned Benalla Munitions Facility. This project is expected to support at least 550 jobs. The forge will produce 15,000 rounds each year by 2028, with the capacity to produce up to 100,000 for global consumption. It will also be the first dedicated forge outside of the United States to manufacture 155mm M795 artillery ammunition. “Today’s announcement is another example of the Albanese Government’s commitment to developing a more capable military force while also supporting a future made in Australia,” said the Deputy Prime…
