Women in Manufacturing activities continue to grow

Brigitte Stavar has been instrumental in guiding us through the past two years of her tenure. When she was first appointed to the role in December 2019, for those who can remember back then, we were in the middle of firestorms all around the country putting pressure on us as a nation to survive. Then we had the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact that had across all states, with lockdown after lockdown, the uncertainty of what the next Government regulation was and the impact these decisions would have. It has been difficult times trying to run a “services” business with member benefits almost non-existent during this time. We launched a new show, Australian Manufacturing Week, that replaced National Manufacturing Week and Austech as our premier Manufacturing show in the country, and subsequently had postponed it twice due to COVID. As President, Brigitte has worked with our team to manoeuvre through these minefields and get us back in…

Grant delivers precision manufacturing capability

Australian advanced manufacturer ANCA is pleased to announce it has received the first round of funding under its Modern Manufacturing Initiative (MMI) grant from the Australian Government. ANCA will establish a precision manufacturing cell at its Bayswater headquarters, using the grant delivered through the Modern Manufacturing Initiative. The company supplies advanced tool-making machines and technology to aerospace, medical, automotive, and electronic industries, exporting to more than 45 countries. Assistant Minister for Manufacturing Tim Ayres said he was pleased to announce the grant, delivering this advanced manufacturing capability at a time when building sovereign capability has never been more important. “Over the last decade, Australian exports have slipped down the global value chain as our exports have become less complex,” Assistant Minister Ayres said. “This grant will enable ANCA to build a new designated precision manufacturing cell and continue enhancing Australia’s sovereign manufacturing capabilities. It will also create an estimated 157 highly skilled jobs during the project and about 330 jobs after five years.” This grant is under the MMI,…

From The CEO: The mother of all products

Every manufactured product you can think of, from the coffee you have first thing in the morning and the cereal you eat for breakfast, to the computer you use at work, the train home in the evening, and the car waiting at the station, and even the couch you sit on to watch your television with a glass of wine – they are all made by machines that were made by machine tools. Think about that... just the coffee beans alone require a coffee bean harvester, washing and screening equipment, dry processing, roasting, hulling, polishing, sorting and grading processes. Each one of these processes requires equipment that has significant machining and fabrication work to produce it. And that’s just the coffee beans. So if you have your coffee with milk and sugar, multiply all those processes by three, and then include the machine that you have sitting in your kitchen that now allows you to push a button and the coffee is produced. Whilst we may take making a coffee for…

Be a Part of AMW2023!

The Australian Manufacturing Technology Institute Limited (AMTIL) is releasing more information about Australian Manufacturing Week 2023, to be held in Melbourne next May. Proudly owned and operated by AMTIL, Australian Manufacturing Week (AMW) is Australia’s premier manufacturing solutions event. AMTIL’s longstanding advanced manufacturing expo, AMW2023 will take place at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) from 9 to 12 May 2023. The Additive Manufacturing Zone will spotlight the latest advances in 3D printing. It includes Additive Manufacturing users, suppliers, and supporters. The process of 3D printing was first patented by Charles Hull in 1986, as stereolithography, and the additive manufacturing industry began as a ‘rapid prototyping process’. The innovations brought about by this technology have been ground-breaking. Today the precision, repeatability, and material range of 3D printing has extended its use into boat and building construction, through to nanotech. The Australian Manufacturers Pavilion is sponsored by Sutton Tools, and showcases the capabilities of Australia’s precision engineering and advanced manufacturing industry. The Australian Manufacturers Pavilion is where AMW celebrates the very best in Australian manufacturing, providing a showcase for some…

Efficient and cost effective clean compressed air: Kaeser launches next gen filters

Kaeser Compressors has just announced the launch of its latest generation of compressed air filters that provide highly efficient filtration for flow rates from 0.6 to 32.0 m3/min. Thanks to a number of sophisticated design features, Kaeser filters can create significant reductions in costs and CO2 emissions. The efficiency of a compressed air filter depends most on pressure loss, and with every 1 bar of pressure loss increasing an end user’s energy cost by 6 percent per m3/min of compressed air, the choice of compressed air filtration will therefore be significant. Kaeser Filter products deliver a 50 percent lower pressure loss in comparison to other filters on the market - and this is a value that remains constant throughout the entire service life of the filter element. As a result significant cost reductions and CO2 emissions are made possible. This is thanks to a number of design features: Kaeser Filter products use filter elements with flow-optimised element heads. The filter inlet is offset towards the air inlet. This increases the flow cross-section at the air discharge side and contributes to outstanding filter efficiency with minimal pressure loss. Generously dimensioned connection flanges furthermore help to keep pressure losses to a…
